Gallery PROFILE
Galerie Henze & Ketterer
Now in its third generation and a family business since 1946, Galerie Henze & Ketterer specializes in Modern art and contemporary art with a focus on German Expressionism. Since the mid-1950s, the gallery has managed the estate of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, one of the most important artists of this movement and co-founder of the artists' association "Brücke".
In this way, Galerie Henze & Ketterer contributes to showing the works of "Brücke", Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Expressionism in one form or another in international museums.
Classical Modern art, Informal Art (L'Art Informel) and Abstraction after 1945, New Figuration and contemporary art with painters and sculptors from Italy, Spain and Germany form the gallery's other focal points.
In addition to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the gallery also manages the archives and estates of Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen, Theo Eble and Fritz Winter. With the information from the"Archiv Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett Roman Norbert Ketterer", Galerie Henze & Ketterer makes an important contribution to international provenance research on the art of Modern art.
Since the early 1970s, the gallery has participated in international art fairs, including Art Basel, FIAC Paris, Masterpiece London and, to this day, TEFAF Maastricht, Art Cologne and Art Karlsruhe.
The gallery is represented online via various Online Viewing Rooms (OVR) as well as with profiles at artsy.net, artnet.com, ifpda.org, printed-editions.com, ocula.com, Instagram, Youtube and LinkedIn.
The gallery has two branches in Switzerland: Wichtrach/Bern and Riehen/Basel are managed by Ingeborg Henze-Ketterer, Dr. Wolfgang Henze and Dr. Alexandra Henze.

The Nude in Modern & Contemporary Art
March 9 - 14, 2024
Booth 497
In this year's presentation for TEFAF Maastricht 2024 at our stand 497, we will show how nude became one of the most popular and frequent motifs of the German Expressionists as an expression of inner moods and feelings. One focus of our stand is a group of previously unseen large-format drawings by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner from 1914. What began in the early 20th century developed into a more abstract depiction of the nude in contemporary art.
Read more about our concept, the artists and artworks in our onlinecatalogue with an introduction by Alexandra Henze.
TEFAF 2024 - Highlight
After a whole century, the important painting "Nude Woman Climbing from the Mountain (Erna)" by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner will be on display exclusively at TEFAF 2024 for the first time since 1922.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Naked Woman Risingfromthe Mountain (Erna)

Oil on canvas

The artwork was last shown in 1922 at the Kunstsalon Schames in Frankfurt on the occasion of the major Kirchner exhibition "Swiss Works by E.L. Kirchner".
It was not until 1975 that Roman Norbert Ketterer discovered the canvas hidden behind another painting. He separated the two paintings and had "Nude Woman Climbing from the Mountain (Erna)" stretched on a new frame.
The picture shows Erna Kirchner in a Davos landscape, when Kirchner painted bathing scenes in nature for the first time again after a visit to the dancer Nina Hard in Davos in 1921. This is an important moment in Kirchner's work, linking the Davos period with the motifs of the early Brücke years.
Art Karlsruhe 2024 - Impressions
World Art for Peace & Freedom
From Abstraction-Création 1930 to the abstract world language 1960
This year's presentation under the title World Art for Peace & Freedom at our H1/B06 Hall 1 is dedicated to works from the Abstraction-Création 1930 to the abstract world language 1960 by 8 artists:
Francis Bott, Günther Gumpert, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Bernard Schultze, Fred Thieler, Hann Trier, Theodor Werner, Fritz Winter.
The presentation aims to tell the story of art in the middle of the 20th century, which developed over and through the violent caesura of the art ban, the Second World War and the Shoah, and yet somehow always remained coherent, using a number of very different case studies.
The Art fair is also accompanied by us digitally. Below you will find important materials and links that you can use to discover our presentation, the artists and their works online. We particularly recommend the Online Viewing Room, which guides you through the presented world art with explanations by Dr. Wolfgang Henze and anchors it profoundly through the biographies of the artists and their works in the context of the development of abstract art in the 20th century.
We hope you enjoy discovering them online!
